David Merenbach

I am writing this letter on Labor Day. With that in mind, I would to begin by thanking all the people that work to so hard to assure our Unit continues to thrive.  Our directors who run games at the Palo Alto Bridge Center (PABC) and online daily. Our teachers and instructors who introduce new players to the game and help us all get better with their intermediate and advanced courses. Finally, my biggest thanks go to all our volunteers who help the Unit run smoothly day-to-day and who run all our special programs and events. Thank you to all of you.

Speaking of volunteers, we have two big roles to fill. After leading the mentor program for several years, Jim Hulseman is stepping down at the end of the year, and we are seeking his successor. We also need an individual to replace Kip Kado to represent our Unit at online virtual meetings as district representative at District 21 meetings. Special thanks to Kip and Jim for their service. Please contact me (merenbach@yahoo.com) if you are interested in either of these roles.

Reviewing results from the All Western Regional Championships it was exciting to see Unit 503 represented so well. My quick review showed that more than a half dozen of our members earned in excess of 20 master points at the event. Incredible!!

Unit 503 and the PABC are offering many ways to stay engaged over the next several months:

  •  The unit games in September are on the 11th and 25th. Sign-up now.
  •  Kathy Harper will be offering her class Polish Your Basics starting September 13. Sign-up now.
  • Kathy is also offering supervised play either Monday nights or Tuesday mornings. This is a great way to get comfortable with the game as a beginner. Find more information here.
  • October 1, the celebrity speaker series will feature Adam Parrish. The topic is “preempts”. More information and registration can be found here.
  • The Super Silver Double header is coming in the fall! Basically, two more sectionals will be hosted by Unit 503 at the PABC. The first on October 14 – 16 and then again on November 4 – 6.  Don’t miss out on this double header of special events. Silver points will be awarded in both team and pair games. (See the postscript about the San Jose (507) unit’s sectional).

Have a great day –
