Thank you to the 176 players for joining us to celebrate our bridge community – 50th anniversary game on September 30! The fabulous turnout reminded many of pre-pandemic club games. It was wonderful to see many familiar faces from past years. World champion Debbie Rosenberg gave a great lecture on cuebidding the opponent’s suit (her slides and notes are posted on our website: PABC Lecture Series). Super volunteer Stephanie Youngquist organized a stellar celebration with speakers (John Schwartz, Bob Enenstein, Paul Davis, Marc Cervellino) telling great stories, recognizing past and current club owners/directors, Unit presidents and Board members, and a special award for Kevin O’Leary for maintaining our Bridge Center. The Bridge Center was aptly decorated: Debbie Carey had some bridge memorabilia; Stephanie created a slide show of photos and anecdotes; a map of the Bridge Center locations (mark where you have played!). 10 lucky winners got prizes from a drawing. Huge thank-you to the game’s directors/owners Prue Saunders and Will Watson for running a great game! Thank-you to Stephanie’s volunteer team: Debbie Carey, Marc Cervellino, Liz Koh, Ken Rosenfeld, Rob Boucher, Paul Davis, Dianne Giancarlo, Alex Narasin, Lucy Ballard, Diana Lloyd, Anne Wilson, John Schwartz, Allen Simon, Mary Steele. Some very sad news – we lost two long-time active members and volunteers of our community last month:
Many of you will remember Nancy Kehl for her frequent, cheerful participation in 499er games at the Bridge Center and the decorations she created for Unit games and holiday parties. She also led volunteers in providing wonderful themed meals and snacks for Unit games back in the day. She passed away in Austin. Cards can be sent to her family: Courtney Kehl, 15003 Gebron Drive, Austin, Texas 78734.
Josephine Ventura who played at the Bridge Center almost every day, and volunteered at our tournaments and special events, passed away after a long illness. From her nephew Derek Sato: “Bridge was one of her passions and she cherished her many friendships within the bridge community. The in-person visits, phone calls and greeting cards truly kept her spirits up.” During her illness, she was keen to know the daily bridge results and hear about the latest news within the club. Cards can be sent to her family: 1073 The Dalles Ave., Sunnyvale, CA 94087. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mission Hospice & Home Care (Mission House) or Peninsula Bridge Education Foundation (PBEF website). A memorial bridge game to remember and celebrate Josephine will be held at Palo Alto Bridge Center on Saturday, November 15 at 11:00am. All are welcome – including young players.
