Everyone Can Improve on Defense
September 2023
Level:  Beginner – Intermediate

Defense is the hardest part of the game, and everyone can always improve. In this two part class, Adam Parrish will cover the basic building blocks of defensive partnership communication and the strategies and thought processes we need to become great defenders. Adam has just written a new book, published by Bridge Winners Press, called Parrish the Thought Volume II: Modern Defensive Thinking. So, he knows what he’s talking about! Attendees will receive a free PDF eBook copy of the book along with their registration.

Sept 23 Class 1: Focus on the basics of defense: signals and partnership communication. What are the three types of signals and when do they apply? What are the basic rules and guidelines we use when leading and following suit to communicate with partner?

Sept 30 Class 2: Defensive strategy and planning, including opening leads and making a plan after the dummy comes down. What should you be thinking about when you select your opening lead? How does your strategy change once you see the dummy, signals from partner, and declarer’s line of play? Good defenders start with a solid plan but are flexible enough to change that plan when the situation suggests it.

Preempts!!
October 2022
Level:  All

Part I

Preempts raise so many questions: When do you preempt? How do seat and vulnerability affect preempts? What do you do when partner preempts? How do you handle preempts by your opponents?

Part II

The first class on Preempts!!! was very well received and covered what to do when you have a “preemptable” hand.  Class-takers were interested in the other part of preempting bidding: how to respond and how to compete against preempts.
