When I learned to play golf as a youth I was fortunate to learn from a highly renowned teaching pro. After my first two lessons I asked him, “what do I need to do to be a good golfer?” His answered surprised me. He said, “remember three things, 1) Be courteous 2) Keep up with the pace of play & 3) Have fun. If you do those three things you will be a GOOD golfer”. I believe playing bridge we need to observe those same three rules. Are you a GOOD bridge player?
Footnote to the above: the pro told me only after I was a good golfer for six months would he discuss becoming a competitive golfer.
I shared highlights from the Firecracker in an email mid-month (I hope you saw it). In addition to all the other stats previously shared, the Firecracker was a big financial success. I have had a number of questions about the health of the PABC and we have all seen articles in The Bulletin predicting the death of in-person bridge. Let me state simply, the PABC is in GREAT financial health and will be here for a long time. We are actively discussing what we can do to get more people back to the club. We loved seeing people at the Firecracker, we would love to see all of you more regularly. Also, remember if you play online, only the directors hosting games at the PABC are contributing back to the Unit for their online games.
Unit 503 and the PABC are offering many ways to stay engaged over the next several months:
- The unit games in August are on the 14th and 21st. Sign-up now.
- Kathy Harper will be offering her classes Beginning Bridge and Polish Your Basics starting September 19 and September 13 respectively. Sign-up now.
- Kathy is also offering supervised play either Tuesday nights or Monday mornings. This is a great way to get comfortable with the game as a beginner. Find more information here.
- October 1, the celebrity speaker series will feature Adam Parish. The topic is “preempts”. More information and registration can be found here.
- The Super Silver Double header is coming in the fall! Basically, two more sectionals will be hosted by Unit 503 at the PABC. The first on October 14 – 16 and then again on November 4 – 6. Don’t miss out on this double header of special events. Silver points will be awarded in both team and pair games.
