Grant, husband of club owner/director Lori Spaeth, passed away recently. Grant was a lawyer, golfer and occasionally we’d see him at the bridge table.
Although a lawyer by trade, Grant was well known as a golfer and as a past president of the United States Golf Association (USGA). He was also deputy secretary for the Department of Health, Education and Welfare from 1978-80 and a Palo Alto city council member.
As a member of the USGA Executive Committee and then the Association’s president in 1990 and 1991, Spaeth was instrumental in creating the U.S. Mid-Amateur and U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur championships and the USGA’s Regional Affairs department, while also guiding the Association through some turbulent times.
