November 2011 Board Meeting

Board members present were Mike Atherton, Sue Barkley, Valerie Baldwin, Keith Burnett, David Crosley, Lu Isaacs, John Mattis and Bev Nuding. Also attending were Lori Spaeth, Elinor Tanck and Alan Templeton.

New Building Alan reported that 2 processes are going on: the new building is in the permit process with the city. The architects drawings took over 2 months to resolve problems. Minor details were then changed for which approval is needed. Construction is done as far as possible until city inspection. We are approximately 2 weeks away construction resuming. Most all changes except carpeting and lighting will be paid by IFES.

Noise and parking are the primary problems. We will have parking conflict with SIRS and the Conservative Forum once a month. There are 3 possible solutions 1) valet parking 2) use of space at the Buddhist temple around the corner and 3) possible use of city land over Hetch Hetchy water access.

Mike noted that IFES has incurred high extra expenses. They have retained an attorney who specializes in working with cities. We should not expect to see this ending until early 2012. We currently have 30 days permission to use IFES space and are paying $150 per day we use the facility. IFES is pleased with us as prospective tenants have been most cooperative.

The telephone system is operational but internet service will have to be worked on. Game results may be slower than usual in the interim.

The October minutes were approved.

Kibitzer Elinor asked the board to be sure the ballot box is put out at each game. The results will be official by 11/15 and put in the next Kibitzer.

Sue will invite new board members to the next meeting.

Unit Games Keith said there will be no November potluck dinner. The next one will be December 18 and we will provide 2 turkeys and dressing. January 22 we will have the Grand Opening/Unit party catered by Chef Chu. There will be a table fee but no charge for food.

Both events will be limited. Signups will be: 1st choice on line or by call or email to Keith.

Mike thanked Bev and her husband for before pictures taken of the new center (as well as during and after pictures yet to come).

Treasurer’s report Bev reported that the Unit Bridge Center shows a balance of $158,756 and the Education Fund show a balance of $7368.78.

Lori noted that we have received donations toward the Wish List ranging from $50 to $5000.

John said the sanctions forms were sent to the directors changing to the new address. He brought information on a user friendly cable hanging system for art work which can be set up in the new building for a few hundred dollars.

Items Initiated by Board Members Next year’s Firecracker Tournament will be Wednesday June 27 through Sunday July 1.

David recommended that only necessary items should be changed in the license agreement such as address and carpooling and that we put off further changes until next year.

Mike said Alan C. described a calendar of events booklet we might adapt. Also suggested was a glossy 4 month flyer to be made available at lessons and classes.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:42

Respectfully submitted,
Sue Barkley, Secretary
