Sunday Unit Swiss Teams at Y October 21
The ever popular Unit Swiss Teams is back again for the second
time in 2001.
The Unit has scheduled a one-session Swiss Teams for Sunday, October
21 at 1
p.m. at the YWCA. Because, this is a favorite game and for a prompt
start at
game time, it is necessary to reserve in advance as described
below and to
arrive at the latest by 12:45 p.m. This game replaces the regular
Sunday
Afternoon pairs game.
The Unit requests teams sign-up, with a list of the players
on the team, to
help in the set-up and seeding of the participating teams by Friday,
October
19. Sign-up sheets will be available at the club games or contact
Kevin O'
Leary at 650/965-1827 or email oleary20@pacbell.net. The March
Unit Swiss
Team event attracted 19 tables so we expect a big crowd.
Candidate Search for Unit Board Continues
The 2001 election for the Unit Board of Directors is set for
Sunday,
December 9. At that time, the Unit members will cast their votes
for five
positions. The election chair, Ginger Herrick is searching for
nominees.
Incumbents Ginger and Kevin O'Leary have announced that they intend
to run
for reelection. Sign up now to be a candidate so you will have
the insider
info on the Unit affairs and have your voice and opinions heard
on what you
think is best.
The Unit encourages all members to consider serving the Unit
as a Board
volunteer. Any Unit member who wishes to become a nominee should
contact
Ginger at 650/948-2995 as soon as possible, so that the Unit photographer
can submit photos to the Kibitzer editors by November 1.

Hunt Is On for Nominees for Sportsmanship Trophy
This is the time of the year when the Unit looks for the Unit
member to
honor for outstanding sportsmanship to receive the Trophy to be
awarded at
the Unit Open Pairs and pot luck scheduled for Sunday, November
11. The
trophy, donated by the late George Hiura, goes to the player who
is
friendly, who has a pleasant attitude and who practices active
ethics. The
Unit first made this award in 1962.
Kevin O'Leary, last year's trophy winner, with Lorna Corbetta
and Julianne
and Roy Robinson as committee members, will choose the winner.
Players
should contact them with a call to Kevin at 650/965-1827 to offer
the names
of those whom they believe are worthy of the award. There will
also be
suggestion boxes available at the YWCA, Unity Church and JCC for
players to
drop in names of their favorite good sports. The deadline for
nominees is
October 26.
Details for the site and sign-up for the pot luck will be in
the November
Kibitzer. Put this event on your calendar now so you will be there
to
socialize with your bridge friends.
Bridge Center Negotiations Progressing
At the September meeting, the Unit Board voted to proceed with
Bridge Center
negotiations with the Elwell Court landlord for a long- term lease.
Because of the generous response to date of 127 Unit members,
the Unit
received donations of over $25,000 in pledges and checks. These
shall be the
financial source for the required payment of first and last month's
rent and
for any necessary additional improvements and expenses associated
with a
Bridge Center start-up.
