competition can be pleasurable and for exemplary conduct serving

interest of duplicate bridge and its players.. Make sure you don't
tell who

Still Looking for Bridge Center Site
The Unit Board was unable to complete a satisfactory negotiation
with the
owner of Elwell Court, the location of the former Bridge Center,
that was
acceptable to the club owners. At the October meeting, the Board
agreed for
the future, that the club owners will work to find a suitable
site. The list
of requirements includes 2500 sq. ft space, adequate lighted parking
(at
least 50 spaces), five-year lease, bathroom facilities and a rent
amount
compatible with fees received by owners from the players.

Prepare for December Election
The Unit is getting ready for the annual election of the Board
of Directors
set for Sunday, December 9. Three incumbents have announced their
candidacy-
Claire Coleman, Ginger Herrick and Kevin O'Leary. The other nominees
are
Gloria Leitstein and Barbara Sonsini. The Election Chairman urges
any member
who would like to add their name to the list immediately contact
Ginger at
650/948-2995.
The Unit encourages all members to consider serving the Unit
as a volunteer
on the Board. Board members attend monthly meetings and chair
and help on
one or more committees. This is an opportunity to help set policies
and
express your opinions on Unit issues. In addition to the meeting,
the time
required is typically a few hours a month.
In the December Kibitzer, the Unit will publish the ballot,
voting
instructions, pictures and biographies of the candidates.

Table Talk
The September Kibitzer listed Jon Aderhold and Nancy Aderhold
as tied for
first place for Junior Master of the Year. Both are graduates
of the Unit
503 Monday night bridge classes. So, we have some evidence that
the lesson
programs are doing some good! Frank Smoot reports that the current
club
series has 27 players registered for the classes.
The Sunday October 7 Valley Section, of the Mercury News featured
a picture
and story about the extraordinary hiking feats of Unit member
Brian
Robinson. In addition, to his hiking exploits, Brian is a Life
Master.

A Note in the Kibitzer Mailbox
A pair of beginners asked how to evaluate a hand. The experienced
player
answered facetiously, "You bid what you've got!" They
took this seriously.
They later had these hands:
West East
S: AJ9876 S: K10543
H: A2 H: K53
D: 5432 D: A
C: 2 C: A765
Here was the bidding:
1C (I have one club) 1D (I have one diamond)
2H (I have two hearts) 3H (I have three hearts)
4D (I have four diamonds) 5S (I have five spades)
6S (I have six spades) Pass
They made seven and wanted to know how to bid the grand slam,
since neither
held seven spades.
