November 2001

Enjoy November 11 Unit Pot Luck, Trophy Award, Bridge

The Unit is hosting a good times event - good food, good company and good
bridge fun on Sunday evening November 11 at the Y. In addition, the Unit
will award the Sportsmanship Trophy to a deserving member. Get together for
the pot luck at 6 p.m. followed by the trophy presentation and a stratified
pairs game at 7 p.m.

The Unit invites players to donate a dish for the pot luck, be it hors d'
oeuvres, salad, casserole, dessert. The Unit as usual will prepare turkey,
bread and coffee. Please make it easier for the planning committee by making
a reservation by November 8. To reserve, please phone Claire at 650/368-5917
or Kevin at 650/965-1827 or email Kevin at oleary20@pacbell.net. This is the
only way to let us know you are coming, because there will be no sign-up
list posted. The fee for the pot luck and game is $7.

Just before play gets underway, last year's winner, Kevin O'Leary, will
present the Sportsmanship Trophy to the 2001 winner, chosen for ethical,
friendly and gracious manners at the bridge table, for proving strict
competition can be pleasurable and for exemplary conduct serving the best
interest of duplicate bridge and its players.. Make sure you don't tell who
will get it, because it's a secret!

The names of current Unit members who have received the trophy in the past
are: starting with the most recent- Kevin O'Leary, Robinson family, Faith
Lentz, Mary Ann Larkin, Sylvia Oakes, Lori Spaeth, Mary Ann Berg, Bennie Lu
Chakerian, Carol Ross, Jerry Jones, Jim Owens, John Stanczak, Mary and Mac
MacKinnon, Carla Davis, Marge Yates, Tom Ross, Lorna Corbetta and Jerry
Smith.

Still Looking for Bridge Center Site

The Unit Board was unable to complete a satisfactory negotiation with the
owner of Elwell Court, the location of the former Bridge Center, that was
acceptable to the club owners. At the October meeting, the Board agreed for
the future, that the club owners will work to find a suitable site. The list
of requirements includes 2500 sq. ft space, adequate lighted parking (at
least 50 spaces), five-year lease, bathroom facilities and a rent amount
compatible with fees received by owners from the players.

Reminder: Sunday, Oct. 28 NAOP Unit Final

The Palo Alto Unit will hold its NAOP Unit final on Sunday, Oct. 28 at the
JCC at 655 Arastadero Road. This is a two-session stratified flight A, B, C
event for players who qualified in a club NAOP game. Game time for the first
session is noon. The director will announce the time for the evening
session.

Prepare for December Election

The Unit is getting ready for the annual election of the Board of Directors
set for Sunday, December 9. Three incumbents have announced their candidacy-
Claire Coleman, Ginger Herrick and Kevin O'Leary. The other nominees are
Gloria Leitstein and Barbara Sonsini. The Election Chairman urges any member
who would like to add their name to the list immediately contact Ginger at
650/948-2995.

The Unit encourages all members to consider serving the Unit as a volunteer
on the Board. Board members attend monthly meetings and chair and help on
one or more committees. This is an opportunity to help set policies and
express your opinions on Unit issues. In addition to the meeting, the time
required is typically a few hours a month.

In the December Kibitzer, the Unit will publish the ballot, voting
instructions, pictures and biographies of the candidates.

Sherie Greenberg Wins Unit Individual

At the Unit Individual tournament held Sunday afternoon, September 23 at the
Y, Sherie Greenberg came in first with a 63% score, followed by Trina Bowman
in second. This unique format proved to be popular with 48 players
participating. The Unit will list Sherie's name on the Individual plaque
trophy.

Table Talk

The September Kibitzer listed Jon Aderhold and Nancy Aderhold as tied for
first place for Junior Master of the Year. Both are graduates of the Unit
503 Monday night bridge classes. So, we have some evidence that the lesson
programs are doing some good! Frank Smoot reports that the current club
series has 27 players registered for the classes.

The Sunday October 7 Valley Section, of the Mercury News featured a picture
and story about the extraordinary hiking feats of Unit member Brian
Robinson. In addition, to his hiking exploits, Brian is a Life Master.

A Note in the Kibitzer Mailbox

A pair of beginners asked how to evaluate a hand. The experienced player
answered facetiously, "You bid what you've got!" They took this seriously.
They later had these hands:

West East
S: AJ9876 S: K10543
H: A2 H: K53
D: 5432 D: A
C: 2 C: A765

Here was the bidding:

1C (I have one club) 1D (I have one diamond)
2H (I have two hearts) 3H (I have three hearts)
4D (I have four diamonds) 5S (I have five spades)
6S (I have six spades) Pass

They made seven and wanted to know how to bid the grand slam, since neither
held seven spades.
