Save Sunday Afternoon, March 25 for Unit Swiss Teams
Here's a chance to play in one of your favorite events without
traveling to
a sectional or regional. The Unit has scheduled a one-session
Swiss Teams
for Sunday, March 25 at 1 p.m. at the YWCA. This game will be
run
conjunctively with the regular Sunday Afternoon pairs game.
The Unit requests teams sign-up, with a list of the players
on the team, to
help in the set-up and seeding of the participating teams by Friday,
March
23. Sign-up sheets will be available at the club games or contact
Kevin
O'Leary at 650/965-1827 or email: oleary20@pacbell.net. The Unit
is holding
this event in the afternoon as a trial. Should the participation
merit it,
the Tournament Chairman will consider more afternoon games.

Unit Looking for More Directors
At the February meeting, the Board discussed its interest in
additions to
the list of club directors, both on a permanent or substitute
basis to
assist current directors, who may have a schedule conflict. As
part of the
plan to achieve this objective, the Unit invites members of the
Palo Alto
Unit and neighboring Units to participate in a director lesson
course.
If anyone has a possible interest in directing games on a permanent
or
substitute basis or in taking part in a tutorial program, please
respond to
Albert Pagin at 650/948-0562 or by email to: albertpagin@hotmail.com.

New Convention Merits a Top!
Jim O'Neil reports the use of a nice treatment to show minor
suit hands over
2NT from Jim Woodside and Viorel.
Over 2NT or equivalent, 3S is a transfer to 3NT, then 4 of
a minor is both
minors (could be 5-4) with better or longer in the suit bid. If
opener likes
that info, he bids 4H or 4S as KCB in clubs or diamonds, respectively.
With
one minor, responder to big hand bids 4H or 4S as KCB in the single
suiter
in clubs or diamonds, respectively.
So it happened for Jim with this hand below and it was heaven,
S J109 H none
D AQxxx C xxxxx, with his partner holding Axx AKJ Kxx AKQ9
The auction went: 2C-2H (A or two Ks), 2NT-3S, 3NT-4D, 5NT
(grand slam
force)-7D, 7NT!!!
After their top, there were several in 6NT and a lot of pairs
in 6 of a
minor. Was that not an awesome auction with a super convention?

The Unit is trying to update the player telephone list. This
list is for the
convenience of players to use for contacts for partnerships or
game dates.
Please contact Lori Spaeth at 650/383-5033 (e-mail: lorispaeth@home.com)
to
update your information and/or add your name to the list. If anyone
is
wondering why no one ever calls to play, it might be that your
number on the
list is wrong or outdated.
In addition, visitors to the Unit web page will find a membership
directory
in the Table of Contents. This is for those who would like to
list one or
all of the following: telephone number, email address, master
