Have a Blast at the
Palo Alto Firecracker Sectional June 30-July 4
Everyone in bridge will be there! The Unit wants you to be
among them!
Celebrate your holiday with bridge at the Firecracker Sectional
at the Elks
Lodge from Saturday, June 30 through Wednesday, July 4. The fun
starts with
the Prime Time Bracketed Knockouts and pair games in the afternoon
and
continues with single session stratified and flighted pair events
afternoon
and evenings through Tuesday evening, with early start and finish
times, on
Sunday. The tournament concludes on Wednesday with the Strati-Flighted
two-session Open Swiss again with an early start and end time
so players can
join in traditional parties and fireworks. The committee, headed
by
Marianne Moutoux, has not forgotten the non-expert players. The
newcomers
and non-Life masters will have their own playing area, chaired
by Kevin O'
Leary, with games for 0-5, 5-20, 20-50, 50-100 and 100-200 master
point
strata at every session. There will be prizes and photos for the
players who
accumulate the most points in 0-200, 0-20 and 0-5 strata.
The Forum Firecracker Sectional ad has several errors in it.
Please note the
following corrections: The times for the Friday and Monday games
are 1 p.m.
not 1 a.m.!! More important, there is no Knockout session on Monday.
The
schedule for the Knockouts is for 4 sessions on Saturday and Sunday.
The
Knockouts end on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.
Pick up a flyer at your favorite game or check your June Kibitzer
or the
Unit web page http://www.accesscom.com/~unit503 for game times
and other
details. We'll be looking for you at the bridge tables at the
Firecracker,
the outstanding sectional in the Bay Area.

Pitch In for the Unit Firecracker
Marianne Moutoux, the Firecracker Sectional Chairman and her
committee,
Ethel Worcester, Mary Ann Larkin, Lorna Corbetta and Kevin O'Leary
need
assistance and are asking Unit members to give their support.
They are
asking volunteers to come set up tables and help get everything
ready at 10
a.m. on Saturday morning. And at the end of a successful tournament
after
the last hand of the Wednesday Swiss, please spend a few minutes
to help
with the take-down.

Bridge to a "T"
There's going to be a new look at the Palo Alto Firecracker!
The staff will
be sporting T-shirts with a bridge logo, designed by Unit Member
Richard
Johnson, and made by Unit volunteers. In anticipation that players
might
want to have one for themselves, the Unit will have a limited
supply for
sale at the Sectional and will take orders when these are gone.

Unit Board Welcomes Ginger Herrick
In July, Ginger Herrick will join the Unit Board to fill the
seat held by
Barbara Vetterlein, who has resigned. The Board selected Claire
Coleman to
fill the Secretary position, previously held by Barbara. The Unit
will miss
Barbara, who is moving to Granite Bay near Sacramento, and thanks
her for
her service to the Unit members.

Be Kind to your Directors-They May Go Away
Many players are oblivious to the extra work club directors
are doing these
days. Gone are the days of the Bridge Center amenities. Nowadays,
a director
has to distribute and collect biding boxes at each session. Each
player can
do his/her part by putting away the bidding cards into the box
at the end of
play.
An even bigger headache for the director is the frequent requirement
to set
up tables and chairs and take them down and put them away after
a game. This
can be very strenuous and players should be aware of the time
and the effort
this requires and literally offer a helping hand. (We even heard
of an
incident where the director took down the tables. Meanwhile, a
player held a
bridge postmortem and got up and left without taking down his
table - the
last one.)

Stanford Hosts Audrey Grant Bridge Festival
Starting Thursday, August 19 and continuing through Sunday,
the Audrey Grant
Better Bridge Team will hold a festival at Stanford University.
The topic,
Modern Conventions, includes the reasons for the use of conventions
and the
ones addressed include Jacoby transfers, Jacoby 2NT, weak two-bids,
strong
artificial 2 opening, Drury, negative doubles and finding key
cards when
looking for a slam. For further information, call Terry Terzian
at
